Guild Wars 2: Human Week Summary

So, as human week draws to a close - its probably pertinent to look back and see what we've learnt. Wait a minute - you might say - hold on, isn't every week Human Week. Well, yes, I suppose so - but this is Guild Wars 2 Human Week so cool your jets. Take another sip of that wine and I'll go see what we have here:

Day one saw us introduced to some of the ambient audio and conversations we might encounter when we are rampaging through Human territories in John Ryan's article "Against the Wall: Humanity in Guild Wars 2". I am really enthusiastic about what ANet are trying to do here. One of the things I've noticed in my MMO gallivants is that often the main hubs (usually cities and other high traffic areas) are only given life through the existence of a large number of players in one area. For example, in Guild Wars, Kamadan is supposed to be the main city on Istan - if not in Elona itself - but you can't actually see anywhere for any of the people to live, and the NPCs that are there, just mill about or stand static waiting for players to interact with them. This is one of my main gripes about DC Universe Online (honestly, I am getting around to writing that review!), apart from the heroes and villains swooping around the place, the cities feel empty and cold, not actual worlds into which we are plopped, but worlds which we must imagine exist.

Obviously in RPG games there has to be a certain level of suspension of disbelief in order to enjoy them (further than the visceral joy of hacking off a zombie's arm), but one of the most important factors in any game is its ability to immerse the player in a believable world. It is encouraging that ANet have taken a significant chunk of time to introduce players merely to the sounds that they might encounter throughout the game, it speaks of ANet's dedication to the "art" of creating a convincing Universe.

My only concern, and its no biggie, is that every single voice actor appears to be American. I've said it a tonne of times before, I've nothing against American voice actors, but I'd just like a bit of variety in my conversations. I hope the immersion bubble won't be shattered because every character in the game sounds like they fell out of 90210.

Day two; Aaron Coberly addresses his role in the Human character design in: "Character Art in Guild Wars 2 - Designing Humans". I really liked some of the info which came with this blog - mainly I think because it came with some tasty new armour screenshots. Look at that guy on the left - hes a real warrior! Awesome. I also approve of the middle right. Yum.
On top of the screenshots Coberly also revealed (although I believe I've heard this before somewhere) that we've got an extra armour slot on the shoulder; allowing for customisable pauldrons etc. I think all the armour we've seen so far looks fantastic, and considering Aaron and Kristen Perry worked out that with the six interchangeable armour slots and the numerous armour sets that the guys have created there are in excess of six billion different armour combinations, I don't think we'll be without the ability to customise and create some truly unique characters.

Day three; ANet updated the Human info page on GW2.com. I have to say that we didn't see a lot of what we hadn't already seen in this update. For those of us who are up on their lore, a lot of this is just going over what we've already heard and emphasising the whole "courageous underdog" slant ANet are pushing for Humanity.
The video shown below did show us a couple of angles of Divinity's Reach which we hadn't seen before, so it was definately worth its own post:

Day four; this was definitely my favourite blog of the week; Ree Soesby on "The Line of Duty – The Three Military Orders of Kryta".
In this post Ree talks about the tension which festers beneath the shiny exterior of Divnity's Reach. A tension which I believe will be central to the personal storyline of all Human characters (and probably those of all the other races too) when the game is released. Governance in the Human territories is split between three factions: The Seraph, who protect the territories as a whole and guard Divinity's Reach; The Ministry Guard who protect the nobles of Divinity Reach; and the Shining Blade, who are the personal bodyguards to Queen Jenna. It seems that their jurisdictions overlap on a number of issues and they answer to different parties of different ranks.

The blog post is interspersed with a story involving the murder of a Minister in a poor area of Divinity's reach. Following Lieutenant Serantine through her investigations we see how both the Seraph and The Shining Blade attempt to impose their own power over the investigation. Eventually, Serantine takes her case to Minister Caudecus

"...The Seraph are incompetent, but the queen’s infatuation for that simple-minded captain blinds her to the country’s needs. I will write to Minister Brios’s family and see that they have money for their needs. In this time of trials, we must do all we can for one another. “Nevertheless, Kryta will win through. As we ever have. Just leave everything to me.”

Can't you just imagine that being spoken by Scar from the Lion King? He's definitely a bad'un!

I just want to thank ANet for taking the time to reveal all this information to us. It seems, having seen the news that the game might not be out until 2011 Q4 or later, we'll have a fairly long time to wait until we can actually get our hands on the finished product. As long as when it comes here it blows a hole in my mind with its excellence, then I'll be happy.

Human Week at ArenaNet

Today marks the first day when we'll be getting some juicy info from ANet on the Human race for GW2. Hopefully, a little later today the writer John Ryan will be revealing some of the background and ambient audio which our characters will be party to in Human cities. ANet plan to make Guild Wars 2 cities feel like living, breathing places; rather than the static and ostensibly dead places they are in most games.

In other Guild Wars related shinanigans; I reached Legendary Cartographer over the weekend! Turns out I was scraping around the edges of the Elonian map to reveal as much as possible, I got within 0.5% of 100% before going to my ace in the hole - the Dynastic Tombs. I knew I'd never been there and I was hoping it would be able to chomp off the last .5%. Turns out the Tombs are worth 1.8% and I could have completed the title last week...

Having achieved Legendary Cartographer, that puts me at 26/30 titles maximised. I'll hopefully be maxing out my Luxon Allegiance title later this week (9.92m/10m), putting me at 27. From then on its consumable titles all the way: Sweet tooth, Party Animal and Drunkard. Its not going to be easy as I don't have a lot of money and the Sweet tooth title alone (if I bought it all right now) would cost me 750 000g. So, got any spare sweets for a poor toothless lad?

Other than Guild Wars'ing; I've been working my way through the DC Universe Online world. I'm having quite a lot of fun with it, but I'm not sure I'll play past the free month - I'll be discussing my reasons for this in a blog post later in the week. In the meantime, if you have a villain on the Absolute Power server, feel free to add me and we'll hunt some Heroes together. My character name is Stormenghast.

Distilling January: A Review

I've taken inspiration from tagn.wordpress.com and I decided to take a look at what happened in my newly emerging blog over the course of the past month.

Verydistilled has become a bit of an obsession of mine since I started in November last year, you'll notice I try to post daily on weekdays and stay in contact over Twitter most of the rest of the time.

My topics of conversation through Jan have ranged from creating evil penguin-eating monsters in LBP to attempting to murder my friends over New Year. I've read some really interesting articles over the past few weeks, from the heroism of Twitter defending its clients, tonnes of predictions for 2011 games and even some lore stuff for GW2 (yay for giant polar bear warriors!). Considered buying DC Universe Online; decided against it, bought LBP2.

The most popular posts for January 2011 were as follows:

Video gaming wise my time has been split as follows:
50% Black Ops
25% Guild Wars
25% Little Big Planet 2
Black Ops: I'm now about halfway through my 5th prestige - not amazing by the real hardcore gamers' standards, but impressive for me, I think! I'd rate myself as semi-decent. Usually going positive when it comes to K/D ratio once the game ends (my overall K/D is currently 1.22). Each time I prestige I keep trying to use different guns, but inevitably I always end up falling back on the FAMAS - its a complete beast and I love it.
Guild Wars: I've been striving to finish the Elonian cartographer title by exploring the continent of Elona in its entirety (and so get Legendary cartographer by gaining the equivalent title for all continents), and also max my Luxon Allegiance title through grinding out some Alliance Battles and Jade Quarry after Jade Quarry battles. All the while, I've been chugging booze like there's no tomorrow - I will have GWAMM by the time GW2 is released!
Little Big Planet 2: Only recently got it, but if you've been reading my posts and following me on Twitter you'll know how much I've been enjoying this game. I think I'm on the final few levels now and its getting tough, I've heard the final boss is a complete bitch so I'm looking forward to that. I'll be making a level fairly soon, the Girl asked if I would make one on the subject of "how much I love her" - so she'll probably be eaten by Gobbler's mother. Who knows?

ARG-wise, the first part of my month was filled with 15 Days of Darkness stuff (what with the OOG discussion going on the 4th of Jan), subsequent to this we've got some interesting stuff happening in Marble Hornets and also some real developments from the smaller YouTube stories out there (such as Experience of Evil and Dark Harvest). Other games worthy of a mention:
Missing Wallace - brilliant story in this, uF poster Thunderwolf has just come in and blown the whole game apart, so its well worth getting involved if you fancy it.
The Wrach - interesting story, cryptic and twisting. Worth getting into if you've got the conviction.

Interesting blogs I've come across over the month:
Brit Chick Runs - Healthy living and running blog from a horse-mad oatmeal hoarder, lots of fun.
L'Épée Magique - RPG enthusiast and Dragon Age: Origins player. Debates tea and elvish custom.
Video Games Blogger - up to date gaming news, crashes when I load it at work - update IE systems admin! Curse you.
Kill Ten Rats - MMORPG news, including lots of Guild Wars stuff. Love it.

So, its been an interesting month overall. Expect more stuff from Feb - notably, Guild Wars updates, Marble Hornets shenanigans, Black Ops pwnage, fluff, stuff, waffle and banter.

Battle of the MMOs! DCUO, SWTOR, GW2!

I fear very much that I will be torn this summer. My MMO allegiances and fantasies will be stretched thin across a number of platforms. There are three seperate MMOs for 2011 which are vying for my attention, and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to satiate them all, I'm just not that manly! Firstly, there is DC Universe Online, then Star Wars: The Old Republic and finally Guild Wars 2.

DC Universe Online is a game which actually came to my attention through the adverts before YouTube videos on Machinima. The idea of a superhero MMO appeals to me (although I've never tried City of Heroes, DCUO's closest comparitor), and I can imagine the modern backdrop would provide a nice break from the ordinary fare of medieval style hack and slash. I've watched a fair number of videos over the past couple of days, including the pre release teasers and now some of the "Let's Play" style ones on Machinima and other YouTube directors, and from what I can see there are some things which draw me to the game, and some which sort of put me off.
Firstly, I love the character creation and design, you seem to have a huge amount of freedom when it comes to character creation and I can imagine spending a good couple of hours creating my hero to look just right.

In addition, the world in which the game plays out seems pretty expansive - the videos often show characters clambering to the top of buildings and looking out across the city. Similarly, using their various powers (acrobatics, flight, super speed) characters have a nice amount of freedom of movement, scaling buildings and rocketing across the ground.

However, my Guild Wars background has made me automatically wary of P2P games - I worry that I'll spend the money and then have no time to get the full use of it - this is exactly what happened with Aion (well, that and Aion was terrible after about 2 months). I have other concerns, I read an article by Aitch at CNN where he says:
It’s a straight forward button masher and if this is what you like, then this is for you.
I kinda don't like button mashers - I want my game to feel immersive and intricate. I suppose thats why I've always leaned towards the skill-based MMOs such as GW. DCUO is on the fringe of my mind and I might buy it and try the first couple of months to see how I feel.

Secondly, we have Star Wars: The Old Republic. Now, just to add to my geek-cred, I am a huge Star Wars fan. Having grown up with the first three movies (the first three, he adds with a knowing eye), it is a universe which holds a lot of nostalgia for me, but its not an area into which I've explored my gaming passion (short of buying the first Force Unleashed game on PS2, and a demo of one of the X-Wing piloting games I got from a Playstation magazine when I was a kid).
From what I've seen of ToR, it looks pretty varied. There are a number of different classes, on the light side of the force we have Troopers, Smugglers, Jedi Knights and Jedi Consulars and on the dark side there are Bounty Hunters, Sith Warriors, Imperial Agents and Sith Inquisitors. If you have a sharp MMO mind you can fairly quickly divide them up into the holy trinity which come hand in hand with MMOs. I don't know nearly as much about this game as I do the other two addressed in this post - but that adds to the mystery of it.
Watching the videos for this game it just feels more rich and immersive than DCUonline, it will definately be a contender for my final game...

Guild Wars 2. Now, lets not beat around the bush - this will probably be my 2011, 2012, 2013 and if they do a good enough job 2014, 15, 16 and 17. I've already gave a good summary of what I think of this game - but, comparing it to the other releases of this year (particularly The Old Republic) I think its going to have to compete for my affection.

She can have my affection anyday - http://static2.videogamer.com/videogamer/images/pc/guild_wars_2/screens/guild_wars_2_20.jpg
As I've said before, the art in GW2 is quite astounding and I fully expect the finished product to be a truly beautiful game, I just hope they pull off the combat in a real-time non instanced world to the highest quality. Out of the 5 races - Human, Charr, Norn, Sylvari and Asura - I am totally flummoxed about who to choose. I'm waiting on a bit more information before I make my final choice, but I am so excited about this game I squee a little whenever the slightest bit of information is released. There is supposed to be a new class reveal early this year and the whole community is holding its breath - myself, I am waiting to see which class can dual wield pistols.

Ultimately, each of the other two will have to truly astonish me to beat GW2 into my heart - I'm a true GW enthusiast through and through. DCUO looks a bit flimsy for me atm, and SWTOR needs to give me a bit more info on the "day to day" play which the game will involve before I'll invest my time in it.
